FAVOURITE FESTIVAL IN MYANMAR

Myanmar people are fond of festivals, which are usually based on the culture or religion. All are celebrated traditionally and each festival has its special feature. There are twelve months in a year, almost every month has the festival or ceremony. Everyone can observe the real ways of life of Myanmar people and their cultures and customs.

Kachin Manaw Festival (Myitkyina)

The Manaw festival is held in honor of Nats (traditional family gods) to ensure good weather for a bumper harvest or to celebrate good fortune and success. There are traditional dances by various Kachin groups, tug-of-war matches and bean-bag fighting games and food galore, sold at makeshift stalls. The fun continues all-day long. It is the most colorful gathering you could have witnessed anywhere, with men and women in the traditional formal costumes, headgear, ornaments, jewelry and ceremonial weapons. It usually starts at the end of December and at the beginning of January.

Naga New Year Festival (Naga Land)

Ceremony of Naga New Year Festival will be held on 14th and 15th every January. Presentation of Naga History. Their unique traditional dance, martial music and cults of animism are unique and interesting. Enjoy dinner with Naga Traditional Dance & Bon Fire.

Salon Festival (Majungalet Village)

The festival held on 14th to 17th February. The Salon people are diving without equipment, traditional ceremonies and demonstrations of finishing and boat building technique. The festival the optional activities for visitors will include Snorkeling, Diving, Fishing, Sailing around the island.

Water Festival (Thingyan)

Thingyan is the Myanmar New Year Festival and the most popular in Myanmar. It is usually falls on 13th April and last for three or four successive days. The main feature of the festival is water-throwing or pouring water. Anyone can throw water at or pour water on anyone else with impunity during the festival.

Taung-byone (Spirit Festival)

This festival held on end of every August, the village of Taung-byone, 20 km (13 miles) north of Mandalay, becomes the focus of the Taung-byone spirit festival. Regarding Taungbyone spirit festival, people who believe in spirit beings participate in great numbers at the washing ceremony of the Taung-byone Brothers Lords every year at Taung-byone. It is also our tradition to wash and clean the figures of nats and images of gods as meritorious deeds.

Thadingyut-Light Festival

This Festival is a great festival of Thadingyut, celebrated on full moon day. It is marked by illuminations, a three-day lights festival. Thadingyut is not only a season of festival and rejoicing, but also a time for remembering those to whom we owe respect and gratitude. It is one of the Myanmar traditional for the senior or elderly persons in the streets or residential quarter to receive gifts and respect from the younger people of the community. This festival is held on second or third week of October and lasts for three days.

Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival (Inle Lake)

Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda festival held in October is the biggest occasion of the Inle Lake. Four Buddha images are ceremoniously tugged clockwise around the lake on the royal barge by leg-rowing boats. The unique and most interesting event of the festival is the Shan traditional boat races participated by leg-rowers of both men and women dressed in their national costumes. Everyone may have chance to see the very scenic beauty of Inle Lake and its environments and their traditions and customs.

Hot-Air Balloon Festival (Taunggyi)

A lighting festival is known as Tazaungdaing festival in the month of Tazaungmon. In Myanmar, it is called “Mee-Bone-Byan” (Hot-Air Balloon Festival). Waso paper was widely used for huge balloons and fill the balloon with smoke from a grease soaked rag let in at an opening on the bottom. After getting enough smoke, the balloon slowly rises as everyone cheers. And then, floats upwards until only a flowing round glow of light is seen. People are making the balloons and flying for offering light to the Sulamani Pagoda in Heaven, built by the King of Celestials Beings, and enshrining relics of the Buddha’s hair. Village people usually make different sizes of balloons in the form of birds, tigers and other desired forms. The festival held on every November.
